How much is each speed band?
The table below is the same data the calculator uses. It shows the base fine, the statewide total, the Santa Clara County total and the DMV points for each speed band, plus the red light rows from the same schedule.
| Violation | Statute | Base fine | Statewide total | Santa Clara County total | DMV points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speeding, 1–15 mph over | CVC 22350 / 22349 | $35 | $226.16 | $158 | 1 |
| Speeding, 16–25 mph over | CVC 22350 / 22349 | $70 | $350.03 | $287 | 1 |
| Speeding, 26 mph or more over | CVC 22350 / 22349 | $100 | $467.90 | $410 | 1 |
| Speeding, over 100 mph | CVC 22348(b) | $200 | $860.80 | Not in our sources | 2 |
| Red light, 21453(a) or (c) | CVC 21453(a), (c) | $100 | $467.90 | Not in our sources | 1 |
| Right turn on red, 21453(b) | CVC 21453(b) | $35 | $226.16 | Not in our sources | 1 |
The Santa Clara County chart total excludes two flat assessments, the court operations assessment (Penal Code 1465.8) and the conviction assessment (Government Code 70373), which the county lists separately, so your final bill can be higher.
The statewide figures come from the Judicial Council's 2026 Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedule. The Santa Clara figures come from that court's own 2026 schedule, effective January 1, 2026. A judge sets the final amount when you are convicted, so treat every number as the schedule amount, not a promise of what you will owe.
Why is the total so much more than the base fine?
A base fine is the amount the law sets for the offense. A penalty assessment is an extra charge added on top of it. The Judicial Council's "total bail" adds up the base fine, every penalty, the state surcharge, and two fixed assessments.
| Component | Rate or amount | Authority |
|---|---|---|
| State penalty | $10 per $10 of base fine | Penal Code 1464 |
| County penalty | up to $7 per $10 | Government Code 76000 |
| Emergency medical services penalty | up to $2 per $10 | Government Code 76000.5 |
| DNA penalty | $5 per $10 | Government Code 76104.6 ($1 per $10) and 76104.7 ($4 per $10) |
| Court construction penalty | $5 per $10 | Government Code 70372 |
| State surcharge | 20% of base fine | Penal Code 1465.7 |
| Court operations assessment | $40 | Penal Code 1465.8 |
| Conviction assessment | $35 | Government Code 70373 |
| Night court assessment | $1 | Vehicle Code 42006 |
Here is how the pieces stack up for the 1 to 15 mph band on the statewide 2026 schedule: base fine $35, state penalty $40, county penalty $21.16, DNA penalty $20, court facility penalty $20, surcharge $7 and emergency medical services penalty $8. That subtotal is $151.16. The court operations assessment of $40 and conviction assessment of $35 bring the total bail to $226.16.
Why is the total different in Santa Clara County?
Penal Code 1463.28 includes Santa Clara County in its county list, and the county publishes its own 2026 bail schedule with totals that differ from the Judicial Council schedule. Two things drive its totals.
- The county penalty rate on its schedule is $7 per $10 of base fine, against $5.29 per $10 in the statewide schedule.
- Santa Clara lists the court operations and conviction assessments separately, outside the speed-chart total.
The result for the same base fine is a statewide total of $226.16 against $158 in Santa Clara for 1 to 15 mph over, and $467.90 against $410 for 26 mph or more. Read the Santa Clara County traffic court page for how that court handles payment, extensions and traffic school.

How many DMV points does a speeding ticket add?
A point is a mark on your DMV record. Under VC 12810, most moving violations count as 1 point, and speeding over 100 mph under VC 22348(b) counts as 2 points. A conviction for only one violation arising from one occasion of arrest or citation is counted. Every speed band on the schedule above carries 1 point. Read how DMV points work for the thresholds that trigger DMV action.
How much could your insurance go up?
Insurers set their own rates, and no state schedule covers them. This guide gives no insurance estimate, because we found no official source for one. Ask your insurer or an independent agent for a quote before you choose between paying and traffic school.
Should you pay, take traffic school, or contest?
Paying is the fastest route and carries the point. Traffic school can lead to a confidential conviction but costs the full bail plus fees, and only one conviction within 18 months will be held confidential. Contesting costs time and has no certain result. Our guide to traffic school or fighting the ticket sets out the rules, and the page on CVC 22350 and CVC 22349 explains the two main speeding charges.
How we calculate this
The calculator reads its numbers from a data file built from these sources: the Judicial Council 2026 Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedule, the Santa Clara County 2026 traffic bail schedule, VC 12810 for points.
It leaves out several things that change a real bill:
- Late charges. A penalty unpaid 20 days adds 50% (VC 40310).
- Prior convictions. The schedule adds $10 to the base fine for each prior moving-violation conviction with points in 36 months, counting one prior per citation.
- Construction zones. The fine is doubled during work hours under VC 42009. We have not confirmed the doubled amounts, so the tool does not calculate them.
This calculator gives estimates only and is not legal advice. Confirm your amount with the court named on your citation.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a speeding ticket in California for 10 over?
Ten over falls in the 1 to 15 mph band. The statewide 2026 schedule lists a base fine of $35 and a total bail of $226.16. Santa Clara County's 2026 schedule lists $158 for the same band. A conviction adds 1 point to your DMV record. Prior convictions and construction zones can change the amount.
How much is a ticket for going 100 mph?
Speeding over 100 mph is charged under VC 22348(b). The 2026 Judicial Council schedule lists a base fine of $200, a total bail of $860.80 and 2 points. This guide does not list the statute's separate penalties for repeat convictions. Read the charge on your citation and ask the court which penalties apply.
Is the fine the same in every county?
No. The base fine is the same, but counties add their own penalty rates, so totals differ. For 1 to 15 mph over, the statewide schedule shows $226.16 and Santa Clara County shows $158. Your citation or your court's bail schedule shows the amount that applies to you.
What is a penalty assessment?
A penalty assessment is an extra charge the law adds on top of a base fine, usually calculated per $10 of that fine. The state, county, DNA, court facility and emergency medical programs each have one. Fixed assessments, such as the court operations and conviction assessments, are added as flat amounts.
Does traffic school lower the fine?
No. Under VC 42007, the traffic school fee equals the total bail for the offense, and [VC 42007.1](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=VEH§ionNum=42007.1) adds a $49 monitoring fee and a TAP fee. A court may hold the conviction confidential after traffic school, but you still pay full bail plus fees. A court may set a lesser fee if you cannot pay.
What happens if I pay late?
California law adds a late charge. Under VC 40310, a penalty not paid within 20 days carries a charge of 50% of the total initial penalty. Missing a court date brings its own problems, covered on the failure-to-appear page. Ask your court about an extension before the due date.
